MAP stands for the Musician's Assistance Program. Specifically designed to address the recovery needs of musicians and other music industry professionals suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, MAP was founded on a shoestring in 1992 by Buddy Arnold along with the help of some friends. Arnold, himself a veteran jazz saxophonist, former heroin addict, and professional drug treatment counselor, has created an open circle for the music industry to turn to for help. The only program of its kind, MAP is where people who face many of the same challenges - from artists to executives - can give each other advice, tough love, and hope.
MAP provides complete support from intervention to residential treatment to outpatient counseling and industry only 12-step meetings, depending on the nature of the problem. MAP absorbs the cost of treatment for those without private funds or insurance, enabling them to get the lifesaving help they need and could not otherwise get.
An in-house Peer Network is the core of MAP's program. Each newcomer is matched up with a clean and sober professional from the same area of the industry. The mentor guides his charge through the inevitable fear and second thoughts that come part and parcel with facing an addiction. It's about musicians helping musicians, and that's why MAP's success rate is unparalleled and far above the national average.
MAP is not for profit and relies entirely on financial support from the industry it serves. Due to the increasing awareness of MAP's existence and its tremendous support network, demands for assistance are, sadly, constantly increasing. Blind Melon's contribution to MAP from the proceeds of Nico is an investment in the future of music.
